Hibernation in the Karama Garden

The first cold and rainy days came in the beginning of November, signalling us to start to prepare our garden for the coming winter. Last month we harvested olives, pommegranates, eggplants, zucchini and peppers.
Our pommegranate tree, especially, was very generous this year. The olive crops in contrast, turned out very meagre, as was common throughout the whole of Palestine. In the coming days, we are going to cut the trees and bushes, to dig up the patch and to sow seets for the new year, which will hopefully provide us a substantial harvest.

Solar-Powered Air Heater Project

Thank to a tip from fellow volunteer, Quinten, Michael has begun, in earnest, collecting materials for a solar-powered heater that makes us of discarded aluminum cans. The internet has been a fertile source of information about this endeavor, and if successful, Michael hopes that this simple and cheap construction project can be repeated by many children for their families in the camp. The temperature dropped substantially last week, and it has provided a first-hand experience with the kind of frigid mornings that the people in Deheishe have to live with, due to the prohibitive expense of building insulation. This heater, while only working during sun-light hours, would at least warm up the mornings for people and spare the need for expensive heating systems during the cold days.

Wallpaintig

In order to enliven our sourroundings, we decided to decorate the grey walls in our yard with colourful wallpaintings. The first one, that you can see on the picture is already done.
Another bigger one is planned for our frontyard.
As soon as we have found and pepared a suitable design, we will start to paint, with many helping hands of our children.
We are open and would be glad about hearing also your suggestions. If you have ideas for a wallpainting feel free to contact us to: contact@karama.org
