What is Karama up to? Karamas Cultural Exchange Lesson Our Cultural Exchange Lesson on Friday consisted this week of a presentation on Germany. Anna, one of our German volunteers, talked about general facts, history, landscape and food. Germany, in the middle of Europe, belongs to the European Union and is considered as a global leader. It consists of 16 federal states each one having their own parliament, and at the same time represented in the federal parliament. Election takes place every four years - with the next one taking place on Sunday 27th, September. At the conclusion of the presentation, the listeners compared the political system and difficulties facing political parties in Palestine to the those found in Germany. Anna spent much of the presentation talking about German history and the Berlin Wall until 1989. The kids found it very interesting to hear about the reasons why there existed a wall and under what kinds of conditions people had to live. Especially the fact, that one man - Gail Halvorsen - built the so-called raisin and candy bombers, was surprising to the kids. They asked all kind of questions, and wanted to know a lot about the massacre during the Munich Olympic Games in 1972. Several videos and pictures where contributed a more visceral experience to those in attendance, focusing on the countryside, traditional clothing and food. She pointed out the dresses called Dirndl for women and the Lederhosen for men worn in Bavaria and especially made reference to the well-known Oktoberfest in Munich! All in all, the kids enjoyed their one-hour-trip to Germany and are looking forward to hear next week about France. |
