Rewarding work in the garden.

One of the notable projects here at Karama has been our garden project. Collaborating with three international volunteers, Karama has planted one of Deheishe's largest gardens. This year we have planted two types of green beans, cabbage, butternut squash, hot peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini, and cucumber. These are in addition to our rapidly growing Mandarin Orange tree and our rose trees. While it is flourishing at a quick pace, we currently have two people tending it with diligence.

Tiling with a twist..

Karama has recently retiled its atrium. Specifically, we have re-grouted it. In response to a weak tiling job prior to our arrival, we completed the project at the end of June. After many weeks of grout removal, we finally placed our first new cement. However, we have added a twist... Read more.

Summer Camp 2010

Thursday July 8th marked the completion of our annual summer camp. It was a boatload of fun and encompassed all of our local volunteers, as well as our international volunteers. We had over 75 participants, aged between 10-15, at our welcoming location. The children had the opportunity to express themselves creatively, athletically, and socially.

We had a variety of activities, including separation into majmuww'a (Arabic for groups), where each group had a theme song. In addition, we utilized our volunteers’ creativity and played games like bowling, pop-the-balloon-on-the-person's-leg, and find the coin in the flour. On the creative side of things, the children had the opportunity to paint and draw with a variety of mediums including standard oil paints, crayon, colored pencil, and graphite pencil.

During the second week of the camp, the campers also had the opportunity to leave Deheishe to swim, a rare treat! Unfortunately, all things must end and we are already gearing up for fall and our impending second year of our education project.

Final of Karama's Remedial Education Project.

Karama's remedial education project concluded with the children writing their finals on the first of June. Prior to this, we threw a graduation party for the children with music, facepaiting, snacks, and entertainment. Read more about this remarkable project and the plans for the future.
