Shady turned 15 on Saturday the 6th of March. Karama threw a surprise party for him, complete with several different kinds of cake. He has spent all of his life, here in the Deheishe camp. He's one of the participants in this coming Summer's trip to Ireland, Insha Allah. Shady is shy, but knows he will have to take a leadership role on such a trip. His English is improving under the tutelage of several of our foreign volunteers, and he's been trained to perform the Palestinian folk dance, Dabka. He's also unofficially considered the sweetest personality among all the residents of the camp.

One of our longest tenured volunteers comes from a quiet fishing town on the Normandy coast of France. His name is Quentin, and his fruit omelettes are the stuff of legend in Deheishe. When not exposing refugee children to unusual taste pairings, he is leading kids in extensive painting projects and lessons on the nuances of contemporary French culture.

He is a strong believer in the value of cross-cultural exposure, and because of his young age (he turned 19 while with us) he is well positioned to connect with many of our teenagers at Karama. While he is leaving us in a few weeks, he will be remembered by everyone who spent time with him. Hopefully, we can take a summer trip to France in the coming years and let Quentin play host and ambadassor for France again.
